Sexuality in later life

I have a special interest in the sexual wellbeing of the older population. Enjoying a fulfilling sex life is important for individuals at all stages of their life. Even in today's more open societies, discussions around sex, sexual identity and sexual role models focus largely on the younger generation. Even the medical community is often guilty of assuming that when you retire from your job, you also retire from your love and sexual life.

Many older people are able to lead an active satisfying sex life. Older women do not usually lose their physical capacity for orgasm, nor do older men lose their capacity for erection and ejaculation. However we can expect a gradual slowing of response in the physical body. When problems occur they are usually the result of disease, disability, reaction to drugs or emotional upset.

The changes that occur in women (shape, flexibility and lubrication of the vagina) can be traced directly to lowered levels of the hormone oestrogen during and after menopause.

Older men may take somewhat longer to attain an erection than when they were young. The erection may not be quite as firm or as large as in earlier years. There can be a shorter ejaculation sensation, the loss of erection following an orgasm may be more rapid and a longer period of time passes before an erection is again possible.

Also, as people live longer, more will become single, either through divorce or death of a loved one. You can find yourself in the unique situation of being single again and need some help to navigate the world of dating. I can help you with developing realistic expectations for new relationships.

My education in the field of sexuality and aging has given me the skills and experience to help and assist you with any questions you may have.
